It comes from Castile. From the village of the administrative
area of Villadiego (Burgos – Spain): precisely Sandoval de la Reina .
Descendant of the Count Fernan-Gonzalez,
founder of Castile.
It repeatedly proved its nobility throughout
places and times with the Orders of Santiago, Calatrava, Alcantara,
Montesa and Saint Jean of Jerusalem, as well as with the Royal
Chanceries of Valladolid and Granada and in the Marines Spanish
Corps.
It is indeed the village of Sandoval de la
Reina that holds the origin of the family name Sandoval,
so widely spread throughout both in Spain and in the Americas.
SANDOVAL
CELEBRITIES
Gonzalo de
Sandoval (1497-1527). Cortes adjuntant in the conquest of Mexico. He was a
conquistador as well.
Manuel Sandoval Vallarta: Mexican physician who formulated the
theory of the cosmic rays trajectory when approaching the Earth.
Cristobal Gomez de Sandoval y Rojas (? – 1624):
Duke of
Uceda who succeed his father de Duke of Lerma. He was as greedy as his father.
Jose Leon Sandoval (1789-1847): Nicaraguan
politician, Head of
State (1845-1847). His administration was bad provoking malcontent in the
country. Signed peace treaties with Honduras and El Salvador.
Francisco de Sandoval y Rojas (1553-1625): Duke of Lerma. He went
as far as to be the favourite of the king Felipe III. He established the
"Juntas" (assemblies), which at last proved to be better than de
"Consejos" (councils) to settle and solve the State Affairs.
Nevertheless, he didn't rule properly and stole huge sums of money. Nepotism was
usual and he used to put members of his family in high-ranking positions. Signed
the Twelve-Years Peace with the Dutch and during his rule the Moriscos (Spanish
Moorish converted to Christianity) were banished from Spain.
Once he had been dismissed, he was forced to yield part of his fortune to the Public Treasury to make restitution of what was assessed he had unduly appropriated.
The Count-Duke of Olivares, Francisco's son successor accused them a seized them both.
Francisco was imprisoned in Tordesillas, a village in Castille, but was, under the pressure of the Pope, freed. Died full of anxiety because, actually, after having lost his condition of favourite of the King Felipe IV, his fate was to die on the gallows.
Sandoval Coat of Arms description
It has a
specialised and specific nomenclature in Spanish so it's not easy to explain it
in English. We'll give some details.
On the surface, a silver strip, oriented left to right, up to down.
Other version: on a golden surface a sabre strip.
As we can deduce, the design is the same in all versions to the
village coat of arms shown here in the main page, just varying the colours.
