Sandoval de la Reina is a small
village, located in the north of the Spanish province of Burgos. It's divided in
two unofficial neighbourhoods by a B road (C-627) that goes across the place. The
highest neighbourhood is informally called "La Granja" ("The Farm")
and "El Pueblo" ("The Village") is the lower
Sandoval. Sandoval de la Reina has had a municipality until the 80s, but due to
its current decreasing size in population it has become part of the Villadiego district, being Sandoval 10 km distant from
Villadiego,
the capital of it.
The actual inhabitants in
winter are 90, while in summer the population triples because of the family
members that live out Sandoval during the rest of the year. They come here to stay and
enjoy the summertime. Sandoval is the best resort for them.
Most of the locals
earn their living as farmers: growing crops and raising animals. There is a
number of retired people.
Its produce is:
cereal (mainly barley and wheat), fodder crops. Vegetables and grapes for wine
for private consumption of the locals are also grown. Regarding livestock, cows
for milk and beef, sheep for cheese and sucking lamb (two regional specialities),
and pigs (US: hogs) are
raised.
There's also a game preserve where keen hunters can
track and get pieces of small game: hares, partridges, quails and rabbits.
The Village is
next to the bank of the river Odra, where several species of fish can be caught:
trout, barbel, "boga"
(Chondrostoma polylepis),
"timalo" (Thymallus vulgaris),
etc.
The Odra river rises at Fuenteodra, a village upstream, at the foot
of a full-of-personality chain of crags. On the Odra's riverside there are
some more villages, the most important being Castrojeriz. The Odra river
flows into the Pisuerga river, tributary of the Duero river that flows into the
Atlantic Ocean.
